Habari! Salama! I think most of us have heard at least once in our lives: “Don’t waste food—think about the starving children in Africa!” Decades later, the reality of that statement is still painfully true in Bwiti, Tanzania. But do we really know what it means to starve? We complain about what to eat for dinner—hoping it’s not the same meal as yesterday—while children there consider themselves fortunate if they have even a piece of chapati (flatbread) or mandazi (fried doughnuts), or anything at all. They don’t even have clean water to drink. The water is filled with parasites, so visible that one even landed on Pastor Sam’s toothbrush. Yet children drink from it daily. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. Deeper struggles and sins are weighing on the people that I cannot even bring myself to describe. Witnessing these things stirred a deep compassion in me. So I asked God, “What can I do to help?” But God gently taught me something greater: to let go. To let go of my compassion, my children, and most importantly, myself. I realized He wanted to take the reins of my life—not because He needed me to help Him, but because He wanted me to see what He sees, hear what He hears, and feel what He feels. And I did. I felt God working through me when I prayed for the children in class, when we visited homes, and when we shared testimonies at Simon’s church. God was there with us then, and He is here with us now. I realized that this mission was not only for them—it was for me. God brought me out of my comfort zone so I could truly understand what it means to live by faith, and so I could carry that same gospel back into my daily life—to my family, coworkers, and neighbors. It wasn’t about the materials we brought and shared. What mattered most was planting a seed in their hearts—the seed of faith. By God’s grace, that seed will grow, leading them to believe in Jesus Christ and receive the gift of eternal life, where there is no hunger, no persecution, and no parasites. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14) We are the light, powered by God. We must shine into the darkest places of this world, guiding the lost sheep toward the kingdom of God. May the Lord continuously use Lighthouse School and Way Maker Church to draw many to the true Light—the Light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. (John 1:5) Therefore, I invite you to join us in our next mission—to experience God working through you. – 윤태훈 형제 – |
